Frequently Asked Questions
While there are many different types and subtypes of nose surgery, the following are some of the more common procedures we perform in our surgical center:
Augmentation: Augmentation rhinoplasty increases the size or fullness of specific parts of the nose. This could be for cosmetic reasons, such as adding height to the nose bridge in order to give it a more attractive contour and appearance. Augmentation surgery could also be for functional reasons, such as adding structural support.
Reduction: Reduction rhinoplasty is a procedure that removes or reduces unsightly nasal contours in order to make the patient’s nose more proportionate to their face.
Septoplasty: Septoplasty is a specific type of rhinoplasty that repairs a deviated septum. The septum is the bone and cartilage that divides the nose in half, creating left and right nostrils. When the septum is deviated, or out of position, it can cause breathing problems, nosebleeds, and other health issues. Septoplasty corrects the alignment of the septum to permit regular airflow and restore other functional issues.
Post-Traumatic: Post-traumatic rhinoplasty repairs the functional and aesthetic features of the nose after an injury. If the nose has been broken, Dr. Ashruf may have to re-fracture and set the nose again at the beginning of the surgery to best manipulate it.
Revision: Similar to post-traumatic rhinoplasty, revision rhinoplasty fixes the appearance and/or functionality of the nose, although in this case it is in response to prior rhinoplasty surgeries that may have healed incorrectly or had unsatisfactory results.
Ethnic: Ethnic rhinoplasty focuses on achieving the patient’s desired results while still preserving the unique nasal features of those with ethnic backgrounds. This is often applied to those with African American, Asian, Hispanic, and Middle Eastern backgrounds.
Yes, there is a specific type of rhinoplasty in Baltimore we use to correct this kind of concern called a septoplasty. A septoplasty is a technique that corrects a deviated septum (where the cartilage between the nostrils blocks the passage of air due to injury or malformation) to improve nasal breathing while also enhancing the appearance of the nose.
