What is Rhinophyma?

Initial Stage Rhinophyma

You have probably seen the signs and symptoms of rhinophyma, such as discoloration of the nasal skin, large bulbous tissue on the nose, clogged pores, and overall a congested and discolored and sometimes disproportionate appearance to the top and tip of the nose. However, the condition itself,  rhinophyma, is not known to many.  Rhinophyma is the result of undertreated or non treated skin disorders, most commonly untreated rosacea.

The nasal conditions become apparent as the other skin conditions progress, namely due to inflammation and the production of scar tissue. This condition manifests only on the nose. Even as the baseline skin condition is treated, or is in the process of improving, the nasal symptoms do not improve. Specified treatments must be performed to treat the signs and symptoms of the nasal rhinophyma.

What Is Rhinophyma?

Rhinophyma is a skin condition that causes skin discoloration, the presence of bulbous nasal tissue and overall a congested appearance of the nose. It requires specialized nasal treatments that are targeted to treat each of symptoms and these must be customized to the level of severity for each patient.

What are the Rhinophmya treatment options?

Anyone who has even the mildest symptoms of rhinophyma is seeking improvement. This is because the even among the mildest cases, the signs and symptoms appear very prominent, due to the location, mostly the symptoms are all concentrated at the nasal tip. There is a severity scale index which classifies rhinophyma on grades from 1-3. Grades 1 and 2 are lesser in severity, and respond quickly to non-invasive treatments, while grades 3 respond to more concentrated or involved treatments including C02 laser therapy.

Who Is a Good Candidate for the Procedure?

You are considered a good candidate for non invasive rhinophyma treatment, if you have any of the nasal skin concerns. You can discuss customized techniques to address your concerns with Dr Ashruf at the time of your consultation. Individuals who have severe cases of Rhinophyma,  may benefit from another treatment option.
